Kamal Labbassi is full Professor at the Chouaib Doukkali University, Morocco since 1991, head of the research unit “Geosciences & Remote Sensing”. Holder of doctoral dissertation Es-Sciences (1998), from Chouaib Doukkali University (Morocco); and a PhD from the University of Pau (France) in 1991. Visiting Professor at the University of Nantes (France).
Kamal is council member of the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) and Ambassador, in Morocco, of IEEE-GRSS for the MENA region. He actively participated in the drafting of the Scientific Plan for the Digital Belt and Road (DBAR) program, launched by the Chinese Academy of Science in the framework of the “Silk Road” initiative. He is a member of the DBAR Working Group on Water Resources (DBAR-water WG), and Director of the BDAR_International Centre of Excellence EO-AWARE on Water Resources created under the DBAR program at the Chouaib Doukkali University.
Kamal served as Expert / consultant in feasibility studies and technical reports for the World Bank, African Union Commission and the African Academy of Sciences. He is also Peer Reviewer of the international programs Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area – PRIMA and GMES&Africa.
Kamal initiated and led several research projects focused on remote sensing applications in geoscience and involving a large network of international partners. He has supervised several Master’s and Doctoral Thesis. He authored and co-authored numerous publications and scientific papers.
Kamal is currently serving as President of the African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE).
