Prof Joseph Oloukoi is a Full Professor of Geospatial Information Science at the African Regional Institute of Geospatial Information Sciences and Technologies (AFRIGIST). Since March 1st, 2026, he has been serving as the Deputy Executive Director of AFRIGIST.  Before this position, he served as Head of the Advancement and Linkages Unit (2023-2026), Dean of Academics and Research from 2015 to 2023, and Head of the Department of Cartography (2012- 2015). His research focuses on geospatial analyses and the application of remote sensing to ecosystem dynamics, mapping and modelling of land use/land cover, wetlands, and wildfires.  He holds a PhD in Geography and Environmental Management from the University of Abomey Calavi, Benin Republic; an MSc in Environmental Management (Ecosystem dynamics); a Postgraduate Diploma in Geoinformation Production and Management (specialised in Cartography); and a certificate in Geoinformatics. He is an advocate for effective and sustainable capacity-building in geospatial information science and technology in Africa. He has invested more than two decades of his career in teaching, research, design/coordination of programs, and advocacy. He is currently serving as the Communications Officer of AARSE.
