Background Information
Lake Baringo is one of the Rift Valley freshwater lakes with a drainage basin of about 6820 square kilometres. The lake supports fishing and tourism industries and it’s also rich in biodiversity with over 400 species of residential and migratory birds.
Over the years due to population pressure and unsuitable land use practices, the lake is facing a serious threat. The lake is reduced both in size and depth due to heavy siltation and reduced by about 20 square kilometres while the depth has reduced from 8 metres in 1972 to about 3 metres in 2003. Read more…
