The President of AARSE was invited to the scoping workshop on ‘the role of Earth Observation (EO) systems in Environmental Policy Support – Africa’ held on December 4-5, 2014 in Washington DC, USA and organized by the global change System for Analysis, Research and Training (START). The objective of the workshop was to help broaden understanding of the role of EOs in strengthening environmental policy and governance in Africa and knowledge and capacity needs related thereto. The President presented an invited paper at the workshop titled ‘Current and Potential Role of Earth Observations in Environmental Policy – Challenges and Opportunities’. The trip was funded by START. Other participants represented at the workshop included: the GEO Secretariat/AfriGEOSS; USGEOSS, the World Bank, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). At the end of the 2-day workshops some recommendations were made as contained in the attached extracts of the workshop.
