A new global geospatial dataset for agriculture and food security

ACMAD logo The global geospatial dataset for agriculture reveals the regions of drought where vegetation is stressed due to lack of water. The index captures early signals of "flash drought," a condition brought about by rapid rise in temperature, leading to drying up of the air, reduced rainfall and moisture evaporating quickly from the soil. It is prudent to monitor the rate of water loss through the use of land surface temperature before and take required remedial measures before the condition actually starts having an effect on the vegetation. Satellite images from highly oblique angles

ACMAD logo

Most traditional satellite images show great detail about the Earth’s surface, but as they observe from directly overhead, this vantage point makes the planet look flat. Of course with hills, valleys, mountains, and cities, the surface is anything but flat. So Simmon began fiddling with some of Planet’s satellites, including its 13 SkySats orbiting at 450km above the Earth’s surface that have a resolution of 80cm per pixel. Instead of taking overhead images, Simmon began to capture images from highly oblique angles– as much as a 60– or 70–percent difference from directly overhead images. Read more...

NASA Renews Focus on Earth’s Frozen Regions

ACMAD logo

In 2018, NASA will intensify its focus on one of the most critical but remote parts of our changing planet with the launch of two new satellite missions and an array of airborne campaigns. The space agency is launching these missions at a time when decades of observations from the ground, air and space have revealed signs of change in Earth’s ice sheets, sea ice, glaciers, snow cover and permafrost. Collectively, scientists call these frozen regions of our planet the "cryosphere." Read more...

European Space Agency teams with ICEYE Finnish start–up

ACMAD logo The European Space Agency is to work with Finnish start– up ICEYE on ways to exploit its novel radar satellites. ICEYEndash;X1 was launched in January – the first of multiple spacecraft that will go up in the coming years. About the size of a suitcase, these are the world’s smallest synthetic aperture radar satellites and cost a fraction of traditional platforms.
