The 11th AARSE International Conference took place in Kampala, Uganda from 24 to 28 October 2016. The theme of this conference, ‘Our Earth, Our Heritage: Harnessing Geospatial Technologies for Sustainable Development in Africa’, was carefully chosen to emphasise the vital role of geospatial data and information in achieving the new post-2015 sustainable development goals (SDG).

Private Sector Engagement at AARSE 2016

It was a novelty at the AARSE 2016 International Conference in Kampala/ Uganda that one Plenary Session (Wed. 26 Oct 2016) was entirely devoted to the commercial sector. This was in recognition that the private sector in Earth Observation and Geospatial fields in Africa has come of age, as an important actor and a crucial stakeholder for furthering evidence-based decision making by African governmental authorities and societal entities.

Business to Business (B2B) event at AARSE 2016

This event was co-hosted by AARSE/EARSC with the aim to provide an opportunity to discuss issues of industry collaboration and The creation of an African EO industry association was discussed. The association shall be formulated to be a sub-set to AARSE. Formal 20-minute match-making sessions took place between companies to network and foster collaboration. Response on the B2B initiative was quite positive from all companies concerned. Some African companies got together and drafted a few lines after the meeting spelling out the intention to set up an African industry association. For further information Click here.


The European Space Agency (ESA) donated awards for best papers and posters at AARSE 2016, a trend that spans several years. Read more

GEO Commercial Sector Engagement

The session, which took place at AARSE 2016 in Kampala, had over 40 participants, with over 15 participants from commercial sector. Dr Mjwara, GEO Africa Caucus Chair, opened the session with introducing GEO and why GEO felt important to engage with commercial sector. Commercial sector has a role in contributing / supporting the implementation of the GEO vision of ensuring Earth Observations is used to inform policy and drive socio-economic growth. Read more

AARSE Receives Special Consultative Status to ECOSOC

AARSE has been granted special consultative status to ECOSOC. Consultative status enables an organisation to actively engage with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, as well as with the United Nations Secretariat, programmes, funds and agencies in a number of ways (see attached letter). In addition, AARSE has adhered to the rules of UNCOPUOS which required the application for consultative status at ECOSOC before observer status at UNCOPUOS would be finalised.
