RESEARCH ARTICLE: Standard MODIS Satellite Burned-Area Products

The 500-m Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) burned area products, MCD45A1, MCD64A1, and a merged product were validated across six study sites in South Africa using independently-derived Landsat burned-area reference data during the fire season of 2007. READ MORE

NEWS: Nigeria launched national digital flood model

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a National digital Flood model. The development of the model was a consequence of the severe flooding in 2012, which caused tremendous economic damages. According to the Nigerian Tribune, Minister of environment, Mrs. Laurentia Mallam said the National Digital Flood Model was specifically developed for improved monitoring and forecast nationwide, to ensure effective environmental governance and prompt response to impending flood READ MORE

NEWS: Geochemistry software is free for students

Aqueous Solutions LLC, maker of The Geochemist's Workbench (GWB) software package, recently announced that it is distributing its sophisticated geochemistry software to university students around the world at no charge. Students now have access to some of the same tools used by leading companies in the environmental, renewable energy, oil and gas, and mining industries. GWB Student is available at no charge to undergraduate and graduate students who are currently registered as full-time students at an accredited university offering degrees in geoscience. READ MORE

South Africa may soon have a more effective means of protecting territorial waters from illegal fishers. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) announced a partnership with Space Commercial Services Holdings Aerospace Group (SCSH) to develop a wide-area maritime synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Changes in land cover affect the global climate by absorbing and reflecting solar radiation, and by altering fluxes of heat, water vapour, carbon dioxide and other trace gases. Detailed assessments — regional, global, daily and seasonal — of land use and land cover are needed to monitor biodiversity loss and ecosystem dynamics and to aid in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation1.
