NEWS: Barbara J. Ryan Re-appointed as GEO Secretariat Director
Barbara J. Ryan has been re-appointed, without competition, to a second, three year term as the Secretariat Director of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO). Ryan’ s re-appointment was made by unanimous consent of the GEO Executive Committee.
NEWS: South Africa supports another Nasa satellite launch
South Africa successfully assisted with the launch of Nasa's Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite on 2 July. This was the latest in a number of such launches South Africa has been involved in - the South African National Space Agency (Sansa) revealed on Thursday. "Our coverage included the second stage burn-2 and live video footage of the spacecraft separation," Sansa space operations manager Yunus Bhayat said in a statement.

NEWS: Arianespace to launch Sentinel-1B observation satellite
The European Space Agency (ESA) and Arianespace announced today that they have signed a launch contract for the second radar satellite in the Sentinel-1 mission, Sentinel-1B, part of Copernicus, a joint European Union and European Space Agency (ESA) environmental monitoring program.
The launch is scheduled on a Soyuz rocket in 2016 from the Guiana Space Center, Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana.
NEWS: GIS and Remote Sensing (GISRS) laboratory at Zambia Forestry College
The government has partnered with Denmark to implement infrastructure development projects worth over K6 million at the Zambia Forestry College (ZFC) which also includes a female hostel and science laboratory. “Having the geographical information system and remote sensing laboratory is a big achievement at our college. The AfricaGEO Conference, held in Cape Town from 1 to 3 July 2014, was a resounding success. Over 610 delegates from 28 countries attended the function, which featured 180 exhibitors and saw over 90 papers being presented. CALL FOR PROPOSAL: TIGER Research Proposals 2014
A new call for TIGER Research proposals has
just been opened, with a strict deadline for submissions on September 15th
2014. With this call ESA aims to select up to 10 new TIGER research projects lead
by African scientists(PhD level) focusing on the exploitation of the evolving
capabilities of existing and upcoming satellite missions (e.g. Sentinel-1& 2,
SMOS, SMAP, Proba-V) to achieve innovative scientific results and to
demonstrate applications relevant for water resource management.
CALL FOR PAPERS: Sustainable Energy and Environmental Sciences (SEES 2015)
Prospective authors are invited to submit original papers (not being considered for publication elsewhere) in standard format (double column, single-spaced, 10-pt font) describing new theoretical and/or experimental research. Since 2010 China has launched a higher resolution global land cover mapping project using 30 m resolution imagery, which aims to produce Global Land Cover (GLC) products at 30 m resolution for the year 2000 and 2010. GlobalLand30 data sets are produced at 30m and 250m resolution and contains ten major land cover classes, i.e. open water, wetland, artificial cover, agricultural land, forest, grassland, shrub, permanent snow and ice, tundra, and bare land.
